Two European officials paid separate visits to Greek hotspots during this week, including the migrants' reception and identification facility of Moria at the island of Lesvos.
Accompanied by a delegation of officials, Dutch Minister of Migration Ankie Broekers-Knol went to Moria camp on Wednesday and also met with Lesvos Mayor Stratis Kitelis.
According to a statement by the mayor's office, the visiting official heard his comments on how Greece's maritime borders also happen to be the European Union's borders and must be guarded more efficiently, while he also mentioned Turkey’s recent provocative actions. The Dutch minister promised to convey the Lesvos mayor's comments to European officials, especially on the point concerning Turkey.
Meanwhile, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatovic, who also visited Moria and other hotspots at Samos island and the Corinth area, met with Alternate Foreign Affairs Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis on Wednesday in Athens.
Varvitsiotis focused on Greece's intention to better distribute European support funds among local authorities at islands that bear the brunt of the migration crisis.
The minister also expressed support for another government initiative, which calls for the distinction between refugees and economic migrants in view of decongesting and improving living conditions at hotspots.
