New electricity interconnection plans in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean on the table

New electricity interconnection plans in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean are on the table, focusing on the Israel-Cyprus-Greece interconnection via Crete.
According to sources of the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA), plans include an underwater interconnection with Egypt, and / or its combination with the "Aegean Project" (a project including the installation of a network of wind turbines on uninhabited islands of the Dodecanese and the Cyclades and the construction of interconnections with Crete and Attica), or with other business plans with which synergies may occur.
"We are open to discuss proposals to combine the Israel - Cyprus - Greece project with other interconnections, either within Greece or with other countries of the Eastern Mediterranean," Deputy Environment and Energy Minister Gerassimos Thomas said.
The interconnection of Israel - Cyprus - Greece via Crete with the EuroAsia Interconnector is included in the European Commission Projects of Common Interest list as an infrastructure that will improve energy security and lift Cyprus' electrical isolation from the other EU countries. In its original form the project also included the Crete - Attica section, which was eventually separated and implemented separately by an ADMIE subsidiary. "Following these developments, with regard to the sections included in the project interconnection, EuroAsia should review the project's financial data," Thomas added.
