Snow and low temperatures were recorded early on Wednesday in the mountainous and semi mountainous areas of northern Greece, according to the meteo service of Athens National Observatory.
The temperatures will continue to drop throughout the country, with the coldest weather expected on Thursday or early Friday.
On Wednesday, snow will fall in all mountainous and semi mountainous areas of Epirus, Macedonia, Thrace and Thessaly while showers are expected over the islands of the Aegean and the Ionian Sea, as well as southern parts of Greece.
On Thursday, snow will start falling in the mountainous and semi mountainous area of central Greece, Evia and north Cyclades islands and gradually extend to area at lower altitudes. Snow will also fall on the mountains of Crete from Thursday afternoon.
Specifically for Athens and the region of Attica, snow is expected on Thursday in the mountainous and semi mountainous areas of the region, which will gradually affect areas at a lower altitude, mostly in northern parts of Attica.
Strong winds on Wednesday will blow from westerly-northwesterly directions, shifting to a northerly direction on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Kyllini-Kefallonia ferry line was closed due to strong winds of up to 9 Beaufort that were blowing in the Ionian Sea on Wednesday.
Also closed was the Perama-Salamina ferry line in the Saronic Gulf.
Strong southerly winds blowing in the Aegean, meanwhile, prevented a flight from Athens from landing at Heraklion airport on Crete, with the plane eventually coming down at Chania airport instead.
