Mitsotakis visits construction site of Amfilochia pumped storage energy unit

The prime minister stressed the importance of a project which, as he said, would ultimately reduce the cost of electricity and allow the use of more renewable energy sources in the best possible way.

"Here in the mountains of Amfilochia, a pioneering project is underway, not only for Greece but also for Europe. This important project should essentially be imagined as a very large battery. When we have a surplus of electricity, we pump water from the low reservoir to the high one and whenever the system needs electricity it follows the exact opposite course. This project is particularly important because, as the managing director of GEK TERNA, George Peristeris, explained, it will ultimately reduce the cost of electricity and allow us to use more renewable energy sources and utilise them in the best possible way," the prime minister said.

Mitsotakis was given a tour of the construction site and was briefed on the progress of the works by the president and managing director of GEK TERNA, as well as the project manager Dimitris Vragkos.

"It is a project financed by the Recovery Fund with 250 million euros and, when completed in the next 2-3 years, it will have a very important added value for the overall stability of the electricity system, as we cannot expect the maximum possible penetration of renewable energy sources without having storage methods," he added.
