Greece doubles capacity of RES in four years

Sdoukou also highlighted the strengthening of the electricity network that serves the even faster penetration of renewable energy sources (RES), while she also praised the important role of IEA in tackling energy crisis and guiding governments on the road to climate neutrality. 
The Greek minister also emphasized that in just four years Greece doubled the installed capacity of renewable energy plants in Greece (which now exceeds 12 GW), accounting for 50% of electricity generation, while the target for 2030 is to reach 80%. 

Sdoukou also mentioned the importance of creating and developing new markets, such as offshore wind farms, the CO2 capture and underground storage ecosystem (CCUS) and green hydrogen production. She pointed out also that the time of licensing of renewable energy projects in Greece has been drastically reduced compared to the past.

The conference included the relevant ministers of IEA's member states and many representatives of the industry, while attending the proceedings were European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the US President's Special Envoy for Climate John Kerry.
