Greek President Sakellaropoulou: Women in political leadership have a duty to contribute to inequality eradication
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou was honored with the WPL Trailblazer Award by the President of the Women Political Leaders Network Silvana Koch-Mehrin, at a special evening ceremony at the Acropolis Museum on Wednesday.
Sakellaropoulou emphasized that the women in attendance are leading figures on the global political stage. She stressed that they are pioneering women who apply the principle of gender equality as a basic human right, enriching politics with diverse experiences, interests, attitudes and value systems thus strengthening democracy.
She also highlighted that her election to the Hellenic Presidency four years ago was not only the highest honor for her and for Justice but also a symbolic gesture that honors all Greek women, a significant recognition of women's equality in an environment that does not particularly favor women's participation in systems of power and political influence.
"All of us women who hold positions of political leadership must contribute with all our strength to the elimination of inequalities that condemn the silence and exclusion of our fellow women," said Sakellaropoulou stressing that this is "our moral and political duty."
