Prices in supermarkets fell in July
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Negative inflation was recorded in supermarkets in July, the third month in a row, according to a survey conducted by the Research Institute of Retail Consumer Goods (IELKA) in large supermarket chains.
The prices of products in supermarkets have fallen by an average of 1.56% compared to July 2023, while 13 of the 23 categories of supermarket products recorded a decrease in prices.
The most important price reductions
More specifically, the most important price reductions were recorded in the categories: fresh fruits and vegetables (-7.34%), detergents and cleaning products (-6.77%), stationery, cosmetics and personal hygiene products (-6.32%), food and items for pets (-5.19%), baby and children's food (-3.72%).
Fresh fruits and vegetables have been favoured by the comparatively better weather conditions compared to 2023. In the rest of the items, the decreases recorded are the result of both the normalization of the market after the pandemic and the decrease in producer prices for some products.
The largest increases
The largest increases were recorded in the categories: fresh fish and seafood (+5.90%), appetizers, alipasta and other served items (+5.11%), grocery food (+3.65%), alcoholic beverages (+3.21 %), cookies, chocolates, sweets (+3.01%).
Most of these items were affected by seasonal summer demand (such as fish, soft drinks, spirits) and international commodity prices, sugar and cocoa prices and other production costs. Of the 23 categories examined, 13 recorded a decrease and 10 showed an increase.
