What would have been for many a peaceful afternoon at the beach turned tragic yesterday when a 69-year-old woman was discovered unconscious in the water near "Spilaika" beach in Galatas Kryoneriou, Aetolia-Acarnania.
Local authorities were alerted and responded swiftly, pulling the woman from the sea and rushing her to the General Hospital of Messolonghi.
Despite their efforts, she was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival.
The Messolonghi Port Authority has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking incident.
While the exact cause of death remains unknown, an autopsy has been ordered by the Medical Examiner's Office in Patras to shed light on the matter.
