Dead fish covering Volos port to be removed

Tonw of dead fish have been covering the waters of Volos port for the last few days, as a result of waters dicerted from inland lakes. The fresh water fish die after coming into contact with sea water. An emergency meeting is being held today on the subject of the collection of dead fish from the Pagasitic Gulf in the Regional Unit of Magnesia and Sporades, in the presence of representatives of the involved bodies, in which the Regional Governor of Thessaly will also participate.

Today at 10:00 a.m. the arrival of the first of the special vessels chartered by the Region of Thessaly is expected in front of the Port Authority site, which will assist together with the seven large private fishing vessels and the contractors who have been participating in the operation of the Region of Thessaly since yesterday.

A floating "carpet" of dead fish covered the sea

Thousands of dead, decomposing fish covered a large part of the sea at Volos beach.

Photos posted on social media show boats, dinghies and boats floating in a thick layer of floating dead fish that makes the surface of the water almost invisible.

The stench on the beach front of Volos is unbearable and the catering businessmen are in despair, as they cannot keep their shops open.
