Hellenic Navy to bolster fleet further
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The Hellenic Navy is accelerating its modernization efforts, exploring the acquisition of new warships in response to growing regional tensions and Turkey's expanding naval capabilities.
The Turkish Navy recently announced the construction of three new warships, including a submarine, an aircraft carrier, and a destroyer, prompting Greece to bolster its own fleet.
As outlined in a plan presented to Parliament in November, the Hellenic Navy aims to operate 16 main vessels by 2035.
With its aging S-class frigates nearing the end of their service life, Greece is actively pursuing new acquisitions to maintain a strong naval presence.
The Navy is already working to acquire a fourth FDI Belharra frigate from France and plans to modernize its existing MEKO frigates. In addition, the Navy is considering the European corvette program (MMPC) and the American Constellation-class frigates.
However, both programs are still in development and are not expected to be available until the next decade.
This push for modernization comes amid heightened tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean and a renewed focus on naval capabilities in the region.
Greece's efforts to strengthen its fleet reflect its commitment to safeguarding its maritime interests and maintaining a robust defense posture in the face of evolving geopolitical challenges.
