Hellenic Police (ELAS) are mourning the death of Police Chief Apostolos Masperos and his wife in a road accident on Sunday night.
The accident took place on Sunday evening on the Chalkida–Schimatari National Highway, heading toward Athens, approximately 500 meters before Schimatari.
According to initial reports, the motorcycle on which Apostolos Masperos—who had served in the Coordination Body for Strategy and Utilization of Financial Resources of the Chief of Staff’s Office—and his wife were traveling, veered off course when a rooftop cargo box fell onto the road from a vehicle in front of them.
Attempting to swerve and avoid the object, the Police Chief, who was driving the motorcycle, lost control and went off the road, resulting in fatal injuries to both him and his wife.
An ambulance and Traffic Police forces immediately rushed to the scene, but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.
The exact circumstances of the accident are being investigated by the authorities.
According to reports, the Police Chief and his wife leave behind two children.
