Woman in Thessaloniki killed placing makeshift bomb

Authorities are intensifying their search for a man who rented an Airbnb apartment in the Ladadika district of Thessaloniki, the location of a recent fatal explosion that killed a 38-year-old woman believed to be transporting the bomb.
Police have yet to locate the renter, who is listed as homeless and reportedly receives support from a municipal social welfare program.
Investigators suspect the man, identified as a drug user with a history of minor offenses, of renting the apartment on behalf of others, possibly connected to the deceased woman.
Officers discovered explosive materials in the apartment, including a 1.5-kilogram charge, detonators, and a fuse — equipment commonly used in ATM bombings.
The short-term rental was identified after authorities found keys and a note with the apartment’s address in the victim’s bag. Surveillance footage helped track her final movements to the property.
Police are considering the possibility that the woman was targeting an ATM in the area, but the force of the blast leaves open the possibility of a symbolic attack.
The victim had previous links to an anarchist group and had been arrested as an accomplice in an armed robbery involving a Kalashnikov rifle.
Authorities are now focusing on her recovered mobile phone, hoping its contacts and communication records will identify additional suspects, including the bomb’s maker and others who may have accessed the apartment.
The investigation remains ongoing, with forensic teams continuing a thorough search of the premises.
