Kythira fire contained, Tripolis fire has no active front

The rekindling of a fire that has been burning since Saturday (July 26) on Kythira island has been contained, the Fire Department said later on Monday.
Containment was achieved with the help of 3 helicopters and 9 airplanes, but several pockets of fire are still burning while strong winds with gusts measuring up to 9 on the Beaufort scale have hampered firefighters' efforts.
A total of 67 firefighters with 2 teams of 'forest commandos', 22 fire trucks and volunteers are working on putting the fire out. In addition, an emergency text message was sent through the number 112 to alert residents to leave the areas of Kypriotianika, Mitata, and Viaradika.
Tripolis
Regarding the fire that broke out midday on Monday at Aghios Sostis in Tripolis, southern Greece, the Fire Department said there is no active front, and firefighters are dealing with scattered pockets of fire.
A total of 35 firefighters with a team of 'forest commandos', 11 fire trucks, 9 airplanes and 2 helicopters are in the area, with help from local region water trucks.
In addition, a 112 message called on residents to leave the areas Akra and Aghios Sostis.
44 fires in 24 hrs
As the Fire Department announced, a total of 44 wildfires and brush fires broke out in the last 24 hours. Of these, 33 were dealt with directly, at their initial stages, while firefighters are still dealing with 11.
Local investigation bureaus and the Fire Brigade's arson directorate are investigating the causes of the fires.
The Fire Department called on all citizens to be particularly vigilant and follow faithfully all directions by the relevant authorities in case of fire, for their own safety.
