Hellenic Police - ELAS arrested the abbot of a monastery in Kalavryta and his assistant after receiving information that he was preparing to sell Byzantine icons and two 18th-century Gospels.
According to information, the price the priest was asking for for a total of 17 Byzantine icons and two Gospels - from 1737 and 1761 - was 200,000 euros.
The same information states that at least one of the icons the priest wanted to sell was stolen from Sparta.
The arrest of the abbot and his assistant took place after an ELAS operation in which a female police officer appeared as allegedly interested in purchasing the icons.
Following the ELAS operation, the Ministry of Culture is also conducting an audit of the findings and their value
