Danish woman removed the Greek flag and attacked a police officer during her arrest in Rhodes
A serious incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday in Rhodes, when a woman, a Danish citizen, caused a disturbance outside the Rhodes Security Sub-Directorate building. According to Demokratiki, it was around 04:10 when the 34-year-old approached the Greek flagpole located on the facade of the building at 45 Ethnikis Dodekanision Street, took it down and started running holding it in her hands.
Her act was immediately noticed by passersby, while a few minutes later police officers from the Rhodes Police Department who were patrolling the area spotted the woman a few meters away from the scene. She had already thrown the flag onto the street and appeared to be in a state of intense agitation.
Resistance and attack during arrest
When the police officers approached her to stop her and take her to the station, the woman reacted with intense aggression. According to the official report, she insulted the police officers in English, refused to cooperate and resisted vigorously during her arrest. During the ensuing struggle, she attacked one of the police officers, the 42-year-old chief constable, punching him in the face and kicking him in the right knee.
Before the police were able to restrain her, the perpetrator repeatedly spat in the chief constable’s face, provoking anger and concern over the intensity of her behavior. The woman was eventually arrested and taken to the police station for further investigation of the case.
Forensic examination and police actions
A forensic examination was ordered by order of the competent authorities for the injured police officer, in order to determine the severity of the injuries he suffered during the incident. At the same time, the police authorities proceeded with the appropriate procedures for taking statements and forwarding the case file to the Rhodes Criminal Court Prosecutor’s Office.
The information indicates that the woman was allegedly in a state of confusion, although it is not known whether she was under the influence of alcohol or other substances. The results of the relevant tests are awaited. The authorities are examining all possibilities, while the act of removing and throwing the Greek flag is considered particularly offensive and may result in more serious criminal charges.
The case file filed against her includes charges of insulting a national symbol, resistance, insulting and causing bodily harm to a police officer on duty. The judicial authorities are expected to rule in the coming days on her further criminal treatment.
