The Hellenic Parliament is “adopting” the child of the unfortunate coast guard who was killed in the line of duty in Paralio Astros, as announced by the president of the Corps, Nikitas Kaklamanis.

Earlier today, the funeral of the unfortunate 53-year-old in Astros was held in a climate of sorrow.

Friends, relatives and colleagues attended the funeral at the Church of St. Andrew of Ypapanti, Prastos, to bid farewell to the coast guard, whose loss plunged the local community and the Coast Guard into mourning.

How the accident with the coast guard officer happened

As has been reported, during an attempt to moor boats at a specific point in the port of Astro, a strong wave swept away the 53-year-old along with his fellow coast guard, causing him to fall and seriously hit his head.

An alarm was immediately raised and a rescue operation began. The 53-year-old was pulled from the sea unconscious and rushed to the local Health Center, where, despite the efforts of the health workers, he was pronounced dead.

What does this move by the Parliament mean

According to Nikitas Kaklamanis, since 2010 the Parliament, by its unanimous decision, has been “adopting”, that is, financially supporting, the children of those who have fallen in the line of duty in the Armed Forces, while the measure was extended a year later to all uniformed personnel.

As he reminded, for the first child, the amount of assistance provided is 10,000 euros per year, for two children 18,000, for three children 21,000 and for more than three children 25,000 euros. As long as the children are studying, the assistance lasts until they reach the age of 25.

In the year 2025, the Parliament had adopted 69 children of fallen service men and women (44 cases) with a total grant of over 600,000 euros.
