Man who murdered his mother was released after only four years in prison and went on to kill his father

Shock prevails nationwide after the murder on Sunday morning (25/1) in Glyfada, where a 46-year-old man stabbed his 79-year-old father to death.
However, questions arise about how the 46-year-old was walking free, since a few years ago, specifically in 2014, he had killed his mother. At that time, he was imprisoned, but in 2018 he was released from prison using the beneficial provisions of the Paraskevopoulos law that were in force at the time.
How the 46-year-old was released
The Greek Police Spokesperson, Constantia Dimoglidou, spoke about the issue this morning on ANT1 television, and attempted to explain what exactly happened in the case of the 46-year-old.
Specifically, when asked about this, she replied: "Because there is also a hospitalization in a psychiatric institution, perhaps people have become confused. This man in 2014 was arrested by the Greek Police for the homicide of a relative of his, specifically his mother. He was taken to prison and charged and sentenced to 16 years in prison. Essentially, he should have been released from prison in 2030. This man in 2018, unfortunately using beneficial provisions that were in force at the time, was released. He was considered to have served 8 years in prison and not 4, because when a prisoner is hospitalized in a psychiatric institution within the prison, he is considered to have served twice the sentence than the one he has actually served. So, even though he spent 4 years in prison, the law considers him to have served 8 years of his sentence. His release note stated that this man should be taken to a psychiatric institution because he is a danger to himself and his surroundings [...]. When he was released, he was required to report to the Police Station twice a month. Even in January he appeared twice.
