“Athena”, as one of the two metro tunnels constructing Line 4 of the Athens Metro has been named, arrived today (12/2) at the Evangelismos shaft.

“Athena”, which started from Katehaki, has already constructed a 5.1-kilometer tunnel and its head was revealed at the intersection of Vasileos Konstantinou and Michalakopoulou streets.

The metro tunnel appeared while playing “Break on through” by the Doors while those present applauded.

The 100-meter-long metro tunnel, a reference point not only for the construction of the tunnel but also for the country’s overall know-how, will be dismantled after the end of its mission, brought to the surface of the earth and then stored, according to the manufacturer’s instructions, in order to be ready to embark on a new journey on the next project.

300 workers and 3.4 thousand concrete rings

To date, working in shifts around the clock, "Athina" and AVAX personnel have placed 3,393 such concrete "rings", covering the route of Goudi, Zografou, Ilisia, Panepistimioupoli and Kaisariani. It is estimated that the soil that has been removed exceeds 400,000 cubic meters.

This "drilling" of the first of the two metro trucks working on the largest public project in the country is the milestone of breaking the wall of the shaft, in the language of the construction industry it is called a breakthrough.

The 300 employees of the AVAX-GHELLA-ALSTOM construction consortium who belong to the metro bridge teams, in constant collaboration with the executives of "Hellenic Metro", are working feverishly and are now on the final stretch.

65% of the tunnel of Metro Line 4 ready

The second, the twin metro bridge of the construction consortium, "Niki" follows an opposite course of 7.5 kilometers. It started from the Veikou grove and after passing through Galatsi and the "Helikon" station, today it is located shortly after the station in "Kypseli Square", having already constructed a 2,960-meter tunnel, covering 42% of its route.

Following its route, "Niki" will pass under the Courthouses, Alexandra Avenue, Exarchia, Akadimias and Kolonaki, also ending at the Evangelismos well. According to the project's planning, the construction of the stations will follow.
