Authorities in the municipality of Soufli are on high alert after the dam broke at the Kornofolia farm.

The collapse of the dam caused an uncontrolled inflow of water, turning thousands of acres of arable land into a vast expanse of water.

Thousands of acres flooded in Soufli
The disaster is estimated to have already affected more than 5,000 acres, with agricultural land under water and producers seeing the hard work of an entire year go to waste. The image of the area resembles a lake, while the water level continues to cause great concern.

Local authorities immediately took strict protective measures, prohibiting all movement of citizens in the affected zone, in order to prevent accidents and possible entrapment. The safety of residents is an absolute priority, as the development of the phenomenon remains unpredictable.

The mayor of Soufli, Panagiotis Kalakikos, spoke of another harsh test for the agricultural community of the region, noting that the damages are enormous and recurring. As he emphasized, producers are facing a serious blow to their income, in a period already burdened by previous natural disasters.

According to the estimates so far, the main volume of water is expected to spread throughout the entire floodplain zone of the municipality, intensifying the risk to crops and affecting the local economy as a whole. The next few hours are considered critical for limiting the destruction and repairing the damage.

The rupture of the dam in Kornofolia highlights once again the vulnerability of the region to extreme hydrological phenomena. Beyond the immediate management of the crisis, there is an urgent need for substantial flood protection projects and long-term planning, in order to protect the primary sector and ensure the sustainability of the local community.
