Marinakis: There is no question of Greece's involvement in an operation in the Strait of Hormuz

“There is no question of Greece’s involvement in an operation in the Strait of Hormuz,” stressed government spokesman and deputy minister to the Prime Minister Pavlos Marinakis.
Greece, Mr. Marinakis said during the briefing of political editors, is participating in the European operation “Shields”, which is geographically limited to the Red Sea and does not in any way concern the Strait of Hormuz.
Ships from Greece and Italy are participating in the operation, with the main objective of protecting commercial ships and ensuring the safety of navigation in the region.
“This is Greece’s involvement,” said Mr. Marinakis, noting that Greece has no intention of getting involved in the war, as it only participates in operations such as “Aspides”, which are under the auspices of the EU.
At the same time, Greece is calling on Iran to refrain from any action that could impede freedom of navigation, emphasizing that the universal application of International Law and a return to diplomacy are crucial.
The government spokesman’s position comes after statements by US President Donald Trump, who warned NATO members that the Alliance would face a “very bad” future if it did not help secure the Strait of Hormuz.
“It is entirely logical that those who benefit from the Strait should help to ensure that nothing bad happens there,” he said in a telephone interview with the Financial Times.
