A 41-year-old paramedic with Greece's national ambulance service, EKAV, died Thursday after being stabbed in the back during a confrontation at a home on the island of Syros, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 5 p.m. when the paramedic, whose face was covered, rang the doorbell of a house and became involved in an altercation with the woman who answered, police said. The victim, a Syros native, was on leave at the time.

A man living at the residence then emerged and stabbed the paramedic, according to initial accounts. She fled on foot, pursued by the couple, who reportedly threw objects at her before she collapsed nearby.

An ambulance arrived shortly afterward and transported the woman — who was wearing her EKAV uniform and gloves — to Syros General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The couple was taken into custody. According to reports, they have claimed the paramedic arrived at the house carrying the knife and that they acted in self-defense.

Authorities are reviewing witness accounts and evidence to establish the circumstances leading to the fatal stabbing. The investigation is ongoing.
