Migrant smuggler killed in incident with Coast Guard
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
A fatal incident occurred today near Kos with one foreign national killed from Coast Guard fire, when the skipper of a migrant smuggling boat failed to stop and warning shots were fired.
The Coast Guard had been alerted by a Hellenic Army monitoring station of the approach of the craft to the area of Psalidi and the disembarkation of illegal migrants.
The Coast Guard mobilized immediately, sending a patrol boat to the area, the crew of which hailed the boat's skipper to stop and be boarded. The latter refused and attempted a high speed getaway towards the Turkish coast. The Coast Guard crew fired warning shots that the Turkish skipper refused to heed. The guardsmen then began firing at the boat's engine, and one of the shots hit the skipper fatally wounding him. The Coast Guard vessel towed the boat and the dead skipper to Kos harbor. The seven migrants that had disembarked were arrested.
