Headscarved woman Muslim running for EU parliament
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Anna Stamou is the first headscarfed Muslim Greek woman to run for a seat in the European Parliament, with the Ecologist Green Party, a member of the European Green Party.
If she is elected to the European Parliament (EP) on May 25 she will be the first headscarfed MP.
Born and baptized a Christian Orthodox, she converted to Islam when she married an Egyptian currently heading the Muslim Association of Greecem where she handles public relations.
She calls on Greek Muslims to participate in the EP voting process in order to give her a chance and power to fight for equal rights for Muslims and to work for the construction of a mosque in Athens, the only European capital without a place of worship for Muslims.
Greece has 21 seats in the 751-seat European Parliament. In the 2009 elections the Ecologist Greens of Greece won only one seat as they received 3.49% of the votes.
