Mykonos Clubs On Strike!

Dozens of clubs and restaurants have been shut down on the island of Mykonos for violating curfew laws. In response, dozens more are protesting the rules by shutting their own establishments

Dozens of clubs and restaurants have been shut down on the island of Mykonos for violating curfew laws. In response, dozens more are protesting the government's rules by shuttering their own doors and going on strike, in support of their fellow club owners.

The decision was taken unanimously at a meeting of the union of nighttime entertainment venues who decided to protest the application of law 4249/2014 concerning regulation of such establishments. The night clubs and bars will stay closed for ten days.

As they announced the law needs adjustment as many articles are unconstitutional and an inter-ministerial decree is necessary to regulate the issues, but despite the discrepancies, police have begun shutting down shops, with what they say are tragic consequences for the island's prosperity. The union notes that affected shop owners have no recourse to justice under this law.

After the surprise application of the law that punishes establishments staying open after 03.00 am, shop owners say they are being unjustly punished during the tourist season, which could spell a death blow to the island's economy, based on offering a 24/7 party paradise. The union also notes that this decreases taxes the state may garner.

The new mayor and municipal authorities are standing by the local businessmen, while they're thinking of sending representatives to relevant ministries in Athens to resolve the issue.
