Lectures & readings by Υiorgos Chouliaras ιn California and New York city

The Hellenic Studies Program of Columbia University, in cooperation with the Consulate General of Greece in New York, will inaugurate its new lecture series “Greeks Thinking about Today’s World,” intended to bring together the Greek community of metropolitan New York with the academic, professional, and artistic community of the city, with a lecture by the Greek poet and essayist titled “Diaspora & return: Between nostalgia and ecalgia” to take place at the Consulate General on November 14. The date and place of the poet's reading in New York ​will be announced shortly.

​Earlier, on November 6, Yiorgos Chouliaras will speak on “Why poetry? Why Greek poetry? Why Cavafy?” in a course on modern Greek poetry being offered by Prof. John Ioannidis for the first time at Stanford University, while he will also read from his work in the original Greek and in English translations at a reading being organized by the literary magazine Mantis and the Department of Comparative Literature of Stanford University.

Yiorgos Chouliaras (Iconoclasm, 1972, Roads of Ink, 2005, Dictionary of Memories, 2013) was born in Thessaloniki and worked for many years in New York. In 2014, he was awarded the Ouranis Prize of the Academy of Athens for his work in its entirety. In May 2017, he was elected President of the Hellenic Authors’ Society.
