Alexandra Ouzounidou, an expatriate from Boston, USA, dedicated her degree to the victims of the Pontic Greek Genocide. And because her graduation was scheduled for May 19, she felt she had no other choice but to receive it wearing Pontic costume, in order to honor her ancestors who died and were so unjustly exiled from their ancestral homelands.
Al. Ouzounidou received her master’s degree in leadership and management from Boston College Woods College of Advancing Studies on the anniversary of the genocide and dedicated it to all the victims, saying that “there could be no more meaningful day to receive my degree than May 19.”
“I receive this degree with pride and dedicate it to my ancestors, who suffered unimaginable pain and loss, but managed to survive and rise from their ashes. This achievement is not mine alone – it belongs to those who were deprived of the right to education, freedom and life itself by the ambition of ruthless leaders.
With anguish, sorrow, exhaustion and unwavering faith in God, they fought to stay alive. Their resilience gave me the right to be born, to live freely and to have the opportunity for education, so that I could continue the legacy they left me with strength and responsibility.
Eternal memory to them. NEVER AGAIN. End to genocides,” she stated in her message.
