From Ancient Oath to Modern Ethics: Honoring the Legacy of Hippocrates in the Birthplace of Medicine
Kos, Greece — October 12–19, 2025
The island of Kos, birthplace of Hippocrates, became the center of international medical dialogue during the 2025 International Hippocratic Foundation Week (I.H.F.K.), an annual tradition held in cooperation with the Global Doctors’ Hippocratic Institute (G.D.H.I.). Physicians, academics, and students from around the world gathered to celebrate medicine’s ethical roots while addressing the challenges of modern healthcare.
The event was led by Dr. Nikolaos Papantoniou, President of the I.H.F.K., and Dr. George Patoulis, President of G.D.H.I., the Athens Medical Association, and ELITOUR. The organizing committee included Prof. Dr. Stephanos Geroulanos, Dr. George Tallaros, Dr.Nikolaos Manousis, Dr.Antonios Polydorou, Dr.Philippos Kalloudis, Dr.Konstantinos Pantos, Dr.Konstantinos Kouskoukis, and Dr.Lillian Markak. Their shared goal: to connect Hippocratic values with today’s scientific and humanitarian priorities.
Ancient Wisdom, Modern Medicine
Throughout the week, scholars presented research and reflections on Hippocratic philosophy, bioethics, and lifestyle medicine. Lectures by Doctors and Scholars from around the Globe including the United States, England, France, Greece, and Italy, explored how ancient Greek thought continues to shape medical science, from environmental health and ethics in reproductive medicine, the psychological dimensions of care to how the ancient origins of medicine are applied in naturopathic/integrative medicine today.
Some of the standout sessions, Hippocratic Medicine, Philosophy & Ethics III, examined the intersection of medicine and philosophy. P. Zirogiannis discussed their shared foundations in rational inquiry, while M. Marsellos reviewed mineral-based remedies in the Corpus Hippocraticum that prefigured modern therapies. A. Chrysafi traced early ideas linking environment and health, and Prof. George Chrousos drew parallels between Hippocratic thought, Aristotelian philosophy, and contemporary psychotherapy. Dr.Stephanos Geroulanos lectured on the history of Hippocrates, Dr.Becker about technology in the future of medicine, Wolfson spoke about AI Diagosing and prescribing and legal aspects, Dr. Yanna Darilis bridged original medicine with modern integrative medicine and Hippocratic Principles that are the foundations of the Blue Zone criteria today.

Honoring Excellence
Mid-week ceremonies recognized physicians, philanthropists, and institutions that embody Hippocratic ideals. Dr. Yanna Darilis and Penelope Salmons were appointed as U.S. Ambassadors of the I.H.F.K., while V. Koullias and K. Christodoulidis were acknowledged as donors. An agreement signed with IKOS Resorts, represented by A. Andreadis, reinforced the alliance between health tourism and Greek heritage. Honorary distinctions went to Dr. G. Chatzistergos and Dr. A. Kiaris for their contributions to medicine and research.
A Day of Action and Reflection
The closing day began with the Run in Honor of Hippocrates, organized with Special Olympics Hellas, the Hellenic Red Cross, and local schools. The community run symbolized vitality, inclusion, and the living spirit of wellness on the island that gave birth to medical ethics.
Later, the World Bioethics Day Conference at the Marina Kos Conference Center focused on “Demographics, Low Fertility and Infertility.” Speakers including Dr. Patoulis, Dr. Papantoniou, Dr. Pantos, and Dr.Victoria Polydorou, who addressed the demographic crisis, fertility education, and the ethical dimensions of assisted reproduction. The conference concluded with a Joint Declaration between the Athens Medical Association and other bodies affirming Greece’s commitment to ethical healthcare.
The Oath Lives On
As the sun set over the ancient Asclepion, in a moving ceremony, students and physicians recited the Hippocratic Oath, pledging their dedication to life, compassion, and truth. “In this sacred place where medicine was born, the President of IHF, Dr.Papantoniou stated “We are proud to continue the legacy of the Father of Medicine Hippocrates” and president of GDHI, Dr. Patoulis remarked, “We are reminded that science must always serve humanity.”
The 2025 Hippocratic Week closed not merely as an academic gathering but as a living testament to a 2,500-year-old promise to heal without harm, to teach without pride, and to serve with conscience.
