Greek American philanthropist, lawyer and trailblazer in sports, George James Andrews (1949–2024), was a pioneering figure whose legacy bridged the worlds of elite athletics and Hellenic pride. A native of Elmhurst, Illinois, Andrews left behind a profound legacy as one of the most influential sports agents of his time.
A graduate of York High School and the University of Illinois, Andrews was the first and most prominent Greek-American professional sports agent, rising to national prominence in the late 1970s through the mid-1990s. Known for his unwavering work ethic and deep passion for the game, Andrews represented a blue-chip roster of athletes, including NBA legends Magic Johnson and Isiah Thomas. He stood proudly alongside Magic as the Lakers clinched their 1981 NBA Championship—an iconic moment that symbolized both personal triumph and professional excellence.
Andrews’ client list read like a Hall of Fame roster. In addition to Johnson and Thomas, he represented Reggie Theus, Mark Aguirre, Rolando Blackman, and fellow University of Illinois alumni Derek Harper and Nick Weatherspoon. He also crossed into the world of track and field, representing Evelyn Ashford, then the world’s premier female sprinter.
Before earning his law degree at Illinois, Andrews served as the men’s basketball team equipment manager—evidence of his lifelong love for the sport. Later in his career, he transitioned into NBA executive leadership, joining the Memphis Grizzlies’ front office during their early expansion years, helping to lay the foundation for the franchise.
A dedicated member of the National Hellenic Invitational Basketball Tournament (NHIBT) board, Andrews never lost touch with his heritage. He was influenced by fellow Greek-American Gus Ganakas, former Michigan State coach and broadcaster, who introduced him to a young Earvin “Magic” Johnson, sparking one of the most legendary agent-athlete relationships in sports history.
George Andrews will be remembered not only for his groundbreaking career but also for his generosity, humility, and devotion to family and community. His legacy as a mentor, trailblazer, and proud Greek-American will live on to the generations to come.
