André Rieux, conductor of the Johann Strauss Orchestra, gave his annual performance in Maastricht, the Netherlands, a few days ago, a few days before Christmas.
One of the pieces of the performance that impressed was the Greek carols played by the orchestra and interpreted by the Greek soprano Christina Petrou.
Rieux, in his prologue to the Greek carols, mentioned that with this song, children in Greece go from door to door expecting to be given sweets, likening it to Halloween in the USA and a corresponding German holiday, that of Saint Martin.
“Fortunately, I have a Greek singer in my choir who really likes sweets,” André Rieux said in his prologue, and added: “It is a nice simple song, which if you listen to it enough times, then you will be able to sing with us. You will win some sweets...”.
In the impressive performance, Christina Petrou performed the carols together with 400 wind musicians, as well as Haris Laurisen and Panos Dimaki, who accompanied her with their bouzoukis.
