New York: Holocaust Remembrance Event for Greek Jews

Featured New York: Holocaust Remembrance Event for Greek Jews

With a strong message that anti-Semitism, racism and all forms of hatred have no place in the modern world, the Consulate General of Greece in New York, in collaboration with the American Friends of the Jewish Museum of Greece, held the established annual event entitled “Holocaust Remembrance Day for Greek Jews”, in the main event hall of the Hebrew College, honoring the memory of the victims and renewing the commitment to the preservation of historical memory and the Greek-Jewish cultural heritage.

The event was coordinated by the master of ceremonies, Leon Levy. The Consul General, Ms. Ifigenia Kanara, referred to the importance of keeping memory alive as a guide to the need to combat phenomena of anti-Semitism, hatred and indifference wherever they come from.

For his part, the Consul General of Israel, Ofir Akunis, condemned the acts of hate and anti-Semitism, while Bishop Athenagoras of Nazianzus conveyed a message of friendship and solidarity on behalf of the Archdiocese of America.

Solomon Asher, president of the American Friends of the Jewish Museum of Greece, emphasized the importance of preserving the historical memory and cultural heritage of Greek Jews.

The event’s highlight was the screening of the short film “72 Hours,” written and produced by Deno Seder, based on his book “Miracle at Zakynthos: The Only Greek Jewish Community Saved in Its Entirety from Annihilation.”

The film presented the shocking story of the rescue of the entire Jewish community of Zakynthos during the Nazi occupation, highlighting the collective solidarity and courage of the island’s inhabitants.

The program concluded with a moving musical performance by Meredeth Kelly and Pedro D’Aquino, sending a powerful message of remembrance, social responsibility and vigilance against violence, racism and oblivion.

The Consulate General of Greece in New York warmly thanks all the participants who, despite the difficult weather conditions, actively participated in the event, paying tribute to the victims of the Holocaust and contributing to the preservation of historical consciousness.
