Germans are looking for Greeks for work - This is the profession that is becoming increasingly popular
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The dramatic shortage of personnel in one of the country's most important sectors is forcing the German labor market to turn en masse to Greece in search of skilled hands.
Transport is one of the most critical sectors for the functioning of the European economy, however, in recent years a new headache has been making its presence increasingly felt, as shortages of professional bus and coach drivers are increasing rapidly across the continent.
The available data is particularly worrying, as it is estimated that there are currently around 105,000 vacant bus and coach driver positions in Europe, while without substantial interventions this deficit may exceed 250,000 positions by 2028.
This phenomenon is observed with particular intensity even in countries that are traditionally considered particularly attractive destinations for workers in the sector, thanks to the higher salaries, better working conditions and significant prospects they offer.
A typical example is Germany, which is facing one of the largest driver shortages in Europe. The Federal Association of German Bus and Coach Companies (BDO) has already sounded the alarm, estimating that by the end of the decade the country will face a deficit of around 87,000 drivers.
Faced with this reality, German transport companies are urgently looking for new employees, turning their attention to Greece and looking for employees who are considering moving to Germany in search of higher salaries and better career prospects than those currently offered by the Greek labor market.
One of the companies that seems to have a long tradition of hiring Greeks to operate bus routes is the German Railways Organization Deutsche Bahn (DB), occasionally casting its nets in our country through advertisements in Greek, which list the employee's benefits, including "attractive salaries" and "assistance in finding accommodation".
The emphasis given to Greeks is also given to the creation of a special platform by DB, in Greek, providing them with the opportunity to... envision their professional future in the Central European country.
There, Deutsche Bahn offers the possibility of applying “within 2 minutes” for those who:
- Have a passion for driving,
- Like to be among people and explore new places,
- Believe that a new adventure awaits them in Germany
- In addition, they must speak German at level A2 and hold a European driving license with code 95 and a category D driving license, be at least 24 years old, and show flexibility in working hours.

Those hired will be “responsible for the safe and timely execution of routes and the transport of passengers to their destination” and will “check for any wear or damage to the bus body before the start of their shift.”
DB offers a permanent contract from the first day of work, a competitive salary package, plus allowances for shifts etc., accommodation provided by Deutsche Bahn and a safe working environment with opportunities for personal development.
Regarding Deutsche Bahn, it is presented as the largest railway company in Germany and one of the most important in the world, with more than 300,000 employees and family workers, while it also has a large fleet of buses.
