'The Times' lists 'butterfly-shaped Astypalea' with its pirate past as one of the top16 Greek islands

The island of Astypalea has been included in two new lists published by the UK newspaper 'The Times' with vacation suggestions for this summer. Among the 16 best Greek islands that exude a serene aura, Astypalea is considered the top destination for unexpected explorations.
The international website noted that the butterfly-shaped island remains untouched by mass tourism. History enthusiasts will be impressed by the Roman baths, the archaeological museum, and the Venetian castle. Astypalea features beaches with crystal-clear waters and offers unique gastronomic delights through traditional recipes.
At the same time, the website - with millions of readers around the world - includes Maltezana beach in its "Top 10" list of the most impressive Greek beaches. As noted, "It’s the best beach for those who want to experience shores that, in the distant past, were haunts of notorious pirates. Maltezana took its name from the Maltese pirates who sought refuge in its tranquil bay. It is the ideal choice both for nature lovers and those seeking organised services. This beautiful beach, with its pirate past, will steal the heart of those that will visit it".
The interest shown by popular international media in both the well-known and lesser-known aspects of the destination is part of the new outreach campaign launched by the Municipality of Astypalea abroad. "Astypalea uniquely combines the island’s distinct local traditions, beaches with mesmerizing waters, authentic hospitality, and centuries of history-alongside the future of sustainable tourism. The destination attracts visitors from Greece, Europe, and many distant countries who are seeking a different kind of experience-something they’ll carry with them forever"” added Deputy Mayor of Astypalea, Kostas Kampylis.
