Washington Examiner: US considers leaving Incirlik and "sees" alternative in Greece
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
According to the US media, the US is preparing alternative scenarios in case something happens to Turkey and the US presence there is threatened.
At a time when Turkey is becoming increasingly isolated, with Europe and the United States sending messages of de-escalation in the Eastern Mediterranean, developments on the geopolitical chessboard are rapid. As the Washington Examiner reveals, the Americans seem to be considering the alternative of moving their base from Incirlik, Turkey, to Greece.
According to Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the United States is considering moving its base to a Greek island if Erdogan closes Incirlik. most likely in Crete and specifically in Souda.
According to the Washington Examiner, in a statement that unequivocally shows the US dissatisfaction with Erdogan's tactics, the United States sees a Greek island as an alternative to the Turkish base because of Erdogan's annoying actions, while adding that in case something happens to Turkey is threatened by the American presence there, so this is one of the reasons why we are increasing and improving military cooperation with Greece.
“It's very unfortunate the path that Erdogan is taking Turkey, or has put Turkey on,” Johnson said. “It’s disturbing. It's very concerning, which is one of the reasons we certainly are increasing and improving our military cooperation with Greece ... beefing up our presence in Souda Bay, because our presence, quite honestly, in Turkey is certainly threatened.” said. the Senator.
