The Israeli embassy in the Athens suburb of Psihiko came under attack at about 3.00am this morning. According to early reports two men appear to have emerged from a van and fired 54 bullets at the embassy with automatic weapons. No one was injured.
Most of the bullets struck the external walls although some penetrated windows and entered the interior of the building.
Another two motorcycles may have been involved in the attack. Counter-terrorist police are currently investigating the attack and gathering security camera footage to track the attackers’ movements. Roads have been closed around the embassy which is close to the main thoroughfare of Kifisias Avenue. Police have found bullet casings from a Kalashnikov rifle outside the Embassy.
The Public Order Minister Vassilis Kikilias, who is currently visiting the building of Embassy of Israel stated, “No one will disturb our relations with Israel.”
A similar attack against the German ambassador's house took place in December 2013.
