The "Paolo Orsi" Regional Archaeological Museum in Syracuse inaugurated an exhibition on the influence Mycenaean civilization had on the island, the Greek Culture Ministry said on Tuesday.
"The Kingdom of Ahhijawa. The Mycenaeans and Sicily" will run from May 11 to October 9, and includes 80 artifacts borrowed from the National Archaeological Museum, the Archaeological Museum of Mycenae, and the Archaeological Museum of Patras related to the Achaeans. The artifacts include the 3,500-year-old golden cup from the tholos tomb of Dendra from the National Museum in Athens.
Italian museums lending objects, besides the Paolo Orsi Museum, include the Archaeological Museum of Caltanissetta, the Archaeological Museum of Taranto, the Monuments Office of Lecce and Brindisi and the Archaeological Museum of Cagliari.
The inclusion of the Greek Ministry of Culture confirms and honors the strong ties of collaboration and friendship between Greece and Italy, and highlights the continuous cultural exchange and relation of the two Mediterrranean countries, the ministry statement said.
