With great success, for the first time in Γρεεψε, a hospitality camp program was held for 50 children, aged 13 to 18, of the Greek diaspora from Brazil and Tanzania.
The action was implemented by the General Secretariat of Hellenism Abroad and Public Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the Municipality of Athens, following a relevant initiative by expatriate and educational bodies of the two countries.
"My grandmother lives in Mytilini, with my uncle we travel all over the country. This time, however, I saw Greece with different eyes", said 17-year-old Anna Maria, who lives in Tanzania, has visited Greece at least 5 times and participated this year in the camp program of the General Secretariat of Hellenism Abroad. As she said, "we visited many interesting places, but I singled out Olympia - we learned a lot about the ancient and modern Olympic Games. And the facilities of the Olympic Academy, wonderful".
The impressions received by the total of 50 young beneficiaries of the program were truly the best, while shortly before their departure from Athens, the young diaspora members declared that they were 'blessed' with lifetime memories.
Evelyn, 15 years old, who attends the international school "Agios Konstantinos" in Arusha, Tanzania, although she has no connection of origin with Greece, "learned" our country from her classmates of Greek origin, since the school belongs to the Greek community of Tanzania: "Before I came, I knew about the beaches of Greece, the mythology but also about the fact that democracy was born here - it is one of the fundamental values of our life. The trip to Greece was like a 'cultural reboot'".
The content of the action
As part of their free fortnight's stay, the children participated in educational and cultural activities, visits to archaeological sites and museums, as well as day trips to nearby destinations. They visited Ancient Olympia where they had a very interesting educational three days at the facilities of the International Olympic Academy, with lessons in history and culture. The presentation of the Olympic Education program was carried out by the director of the National Olympic Academy (ETHNOA), Denise Panagopoulou, tennis champion and member of the National Team.
The children also visited the Athens Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum. They watched a screening at the Evgenidou Foundation Planetarium. They became familiar with the Greek language and Greek culture in an experiential and game-based way, through the Educational Action "Playing and communicating in the Greek Language", which is implemented this year for the first time in collaboration with the University of Western Macedonia, by a group of students of the University under the supervision of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Eleni Griva.
