Two men aged 42 and 22 years old have been arrested by Western Achaia police on charges of stealing valuables from a church and were due to go before a Patras public prosecutor on Sunday.
The two men are accused of stealing gold votive offerings from an icon at Aghios Nikolaos Church in Spata on Saturday. The 42-year-old was arrested at the scene while the 22-year-old escaped on a motorcycle and was found a short while later, at his home in a western Achaia village.
In a search of the residence, police found two gold chains, a gold ring, a gold wedding band, a sheet of gold and three gold-plated medals removed from the church. The items were returned to the church.
