Acharnes Municipality calls for urgent action to save Parnitha’s red deer
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The Municipality of Acharnes has issued a statement expressing deep concern over the dramatic decline in the population of red deer (Cervus elaphus) in Parnitha National Park.
According to the statement, officials from the Parnitha Association, who have been conducting regular patrols since May 1, have documented alarming findings. “ Data from the competent services confirm that the population of this emblematic species has reached critical levels, and we are now entering a phase of total extinction,” the municipality warns.
The red deer, it notes, is not only a symbol of the park’s natural heritage but also essential to the ecological balance and identity of the area.
To address the crisis, the Municipality of Acharnes is proposing the reopening of the red deer breeding centre in Parnitha. The facility, it says, should operate with modern standards and proper scientific oversight to ensure the survival of the remaining animals and the gradual recovery of the population in its natural habitat.
