Teachers storm minister's officers
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Tensions ran high today in downtown Athens, as school teachers protesting proposed layoffs, in a surprise move stormed the personal offices of government reform minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The office is housed on the fifth floor of an apartment building on 8 Efroniou Street, and the demonstrating teachers have actually taken over the building.
The teachers are protesting the reservist scheme that end on 22 March, after which those on reserve will be terminated. The demonstrating teachers were later bolstered by demonstrators from the rally called by civil servants union ADEDY.
Things escalated when police attempted to block the ADEDY protesters from approaching the minister's office. A fracas ensued in which police used tear gas. Police remain in the area, and are also within the building.
The teacher's three day strike will end on Friday.
