Zakynthos struck by severe weather, no power for most of the island
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Disaster "struck" Zakynthos, at noon causing huge problems on the island, most of which has been left, since 14:00, without power.
A few minutes of intense rainfall and stormy winds were able to create the biblical images of destruction. As imerazante.gr reports, trees fell and crushed parked cars, there have been hundreds of calls to the fire department for water to be pumped from underground and ground floor shops. The streets turned into rivers with mud through which cars and pedestrians were trying to find a secure path.
In the city, there was a host of lightning strikes thereby literally demolishing entire wood structures.
Starting at 14.00 noon, most of the island remains without electricity. Reportedly 2/3 of the electricity network transformers are off the grid.
