Double counterattack: Greece calls for arms embargo, suspension of EU-Turkey customs union
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Athens continues its diplomatic counterattack, with Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias asking his counterparts in Italy, Germany, and Spain to impose an arms embargo on Turkey.
In particular, according to diplomatic sources, Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias in letters to his German counterpart Heiko Maas, Spain's Arancha Gonzalez-Laya and Italy's Luigi Di Maio, points out the recent provocative actions of Turkey, which, as he underlines, aimed at creating faits accomplis by military means.
In this context, the Minister of Foreign Affairs recalled the relevant intervention of the Prime Minister in the last European Council on the obligation of the EU Member States, as it arises from its common position, to suspend the export of military equipment to third countries, which use the equipment. this for aggression or regional destabilization, just as Turkey does.
Especially in his letter to his German counterpart, the Greek minister asks that the permits for the export of certain military equipment to Turkey, such as submarines, frigates, aircraft and armor upgrades, not be given.
Earlier, diplomatic sources said that Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, in a letter to Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi, stressed that Turkey continues to violate unilaterally, by adopting unforeseen EU tariff, legislatio,n and equivalent measures.
In this context, he called on the European Commission to immediately consider the adoption of further measures.
He also stressed that a possible suspension of EU-Turkey customs union should be considered as a message of disapproval of Turkey's ongoing delinquent behavior against the European Union.
Mitsotakis at the Summit: We raised the issue of arms embargo in Turkey
After the Summit and during the Prime Minister's press conference, Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that he raised the issue of an arms embargo in Turkey.
"I recalled that in previous European Council decisions on the Turkish provocation in Syria, there were decisions on an arms embargo on Turkey. The best expression of European solidarity would be a European initiative not to allow arms sales to Turkey. I raised the issue at the European Council. I think my position was completely understood. I reminded that other countries that do not belong to the European family have decided not to sell aircraft to Turkey, such as the USA".
