Nine attempts for arson have been made at the foot of Mount Parnitha in Avlona area since 8 am, Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, said on Thursday.
Kikilias sent a stern message stressing that what is happening "is not only unacceptable but also obscene and criminal."
"Some arsonists set fires endangering forests, properties and above all human lives. At the foot of Mount Parnitha in the Avlona area, 9 arson attempts were made from 8 in the morning. More specifically, the first attempt at 8.13 in the area of Avlonas, 3 attempts at 8.57 in the area of Sykamino, Avlona, at 9.47 another 3 attempts in the same area, one attempt at 10.51 north of Avlona, 12.02 another attempt north of Avlona in at the foot of Mount Parnitha. What is happening is not just impermissible, but shameful and criminal," underlined Kikilias. As he said, a silver, agricultural semi-truck was identified as possibly involved in the incidents and he added that suspects are being brought in.
"The investigation of the Fire Department, mainly the Greek Police and the Intelligence Service will do everything possible to arrest the arsonists," Kikilias said and added: "You commit crimes against the country, you will not escape, we will find you, you will be accountable to the Justice."
Finally, Kikilias emphasized that all the forces of the Fire Brigade, the volunteers and all Civil Protection are fighting huge battles to deal with fires that occur throughout the territory and some of them are taking on uncontrollable dimensions due to the strong winds.
