- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
A 57-year-old foreigner confessed to setting four different fires that broke out on August 15, 2025 in different parts of Mytilene.
According to information, among the fires he admitted to setting is the one that completely burned down a truck loaded with approximately 400 bales of straw, causing serious material damage and mobilizing large fire brigade forces.
The team of the Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes (DAEE) that went to Mytilene located the suspect, in collaboration with investigative officers of the Hellenic Police, who was taken for questioning and then confessed to his actions.
He allegedly told the investigative officers that his motive was revenge against his fellow citizens.
He added that he caused the first two arsons in retaliation against the two tenants of the land, the third because he "blundered", while the fourth to distract the investigations.
The case does not fall within the scope of the statute for immediate arrest, however, the relevant case file is to be submitted soon to the competent prosecutor, who is expected to issue an arrest warrant after the completion of the perpetrator's confession.
