Football matches still suspended

The indefinite suspension of all Greek football matches is set to continue through this weekend according to an announcement by the Hellenic Football Federation.

The statement reads,

“It is announced by the Hellenic Football Federation that after the developments of recent days there is no reason to recall the decision taken by the administrative council during its emergency meeting of 14/11/2014 for the non-appointment of referees by the Central Refereeing Committee / Hellenic Football Federation for all matches in national leagues (Super League, Football League, 3rd National Division, Women’s championships, Youth club championships, Pre-selection championships for National Teams).

The Hellenic Football Federation came to the specific decision with the sole criteria of the protection of those involved, in whatever capacity, in Greek football. However the required steps have not been taken, either by the state, or by football clubs, as such there is no reason for the Federation to alter its position.”

Matches in Greece’s professional leagues were suspended indefinitely last week after a referee was hospitalized after a violent aassault. According to police Christoforos Zografos was beaten with wooden bats by two people on a motorcycle in Athens on Friday.

The incident has prompted a round of aggressive finger pointing among the managements of the top teams in the country.
