- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
A new tragedy occurred near the island of Samos. 26 people have drowned, among them ten children.
Νine persons have been rescued at least 10 are still missing. Rescue operations continue. The European Commission has warned Greece that it had three months to address serious failures in its handling of the influx, or it could face a two-year suspension from the passport-free Schengen zone.
Greece can be criticised for failing to effectively manage the refugee influx. The EU has given Athens funds to set up five resettlement camps but only one has been built. Instead of registering asylum applicants, the Greeks have allowed many to travel into Europe.
