A dam on the river Evrotas broke from the weather and turned the area of Skala lake, Laconia.
Customers and employees of the supermarket LIDL were surrounded by water that reached a height of 1.5 meters and experienced dramatic moments until they were rescued.
As reported by apela.gr many of them had to climb in carts to be saved. Because, they could not be approached conventional means helicopter assistance from the air force was sought.
Because, however, the helicopter was not able to remove people trapped, as it was considered that it was not safe to go up onto the building roof, eventually the Air Force crew just provided information to ground forces for a plan B, which was the removal of those trapped the building with bulldozers and hoes.
Eventually the plan paid off and the diggers were able to slowly bring 25 people to a safe place. Among them were young children, which for safety reasons, were given life jackets.
