Moderate quake jolts Ioannina

A moderate earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale was recorded at 23:14 on Saturday in northwestern Greece.

According to the Geodynamics Institute of the Athens Observatory the quake's epicenter was located 12 km northwest of the city of Ioannina with 5km depth.

A series of aftershocks measuring 4.4 to 4.9 on the Richter scale did not allow the residents of Ioannina to return to their houses.

Landslides in the mountainous road network have been reported and police, the Fire Brigade and the national emergency aid center are on alert.

Epirus governor is currently in a meeting with the president of the Earthquake protection organisation professor Efthimios Lekkas who arrived early in the morning in Ioannina.

In statements, Lekkas gave information on the seismic activity that continues in the area and derives from a seismic fault which starts approximately 10km away from Ioannina to the Greek-Albanian borders.
