Raid on former Kapotas camp yields crime syndicate hideout

The large scale operation mounted by Greek police ELSAS On Monday at former army camp Kapotas in Menidi confirmed that the area is now being used as a base for criminal activities.

In the crime scene, police found three plantations with about 80 cannabis plants, smuggled cigarettes, one shotgun, two pistols, bullets, while 26 arrests were carried out.

The Kapotaa camp in the past had been used to host the earthquake-stricken, but over the years it turned into a "base" of thugs. From there, the activities of the members of the safecracking gang were organized for operations in Attica and Boeotia.

An indication of the control imposed by criminal elements in the area was that in order to get into the settlement there was. face control by the members of the gangs and the approval of the "leaders" was needed for entry into the area.

Twenty-six people were arrested, five of them for violation of the Weapons Act, three for cannabis cultivation, three for smuggled cigarettes, and one for convictions for theft and forgery, while twelve arrests were made for violating the Road Code Traffic and 12 vehicles were impounded.

Police officers that participated in the operation included members of ECAM (Special Supressive Counter-Terrorism Unit), OSCE (Crime Prevention and Suppression Teams), MAT teams, DIA teams, and staff of the Western Attica Security Department and the Menidiu Security Department, while a police helicopter was also used.
