Polish national arrested in first DMT drug bust

A 66-year-old Polish national was arrested by police in Athens on Wednesday for importing and possessing five kilos of "psychotria viridis", a plant that contains a powerful hallucinogenic called DMT. This is the first time this drug was seized in Greece.
The man, who presented himself as a "biotherapist", was arrested in a post office in the neighbourhood of Dafni as he picked up the two packages containing the plant.
The suspect was flagged to the Greek authorities by the Belgian police, who had information he would be receiving the drug from Belgium. Police say the man prepared tea with the plant which he then offered to his customers. He was led before an Athens prosecutor.
According to police, psychotria viridis resembles Khat, a plant used as a stimulant, but it is included in the category of drugs because of its intense psychedelic properties.
