Serres TEI professor arrested for blackmailing students

The activities of a professor of the Technical Vocational Institute (TEI) of Serres were a common secret. The professor asked for remuneration, either in kind but also for money from students in order to give them passing grades.

The professor and a pair of tutorial school owners were arrested and the prosecutor charged with criminal offenses of felonious nature. The prosecution against the professor concerns the acts of bribery and blackmail, while his co-defendants are prosecuted for direct synergy in bribery.

"He called me to his office, he told me that we should spend an evening together. He suggested if I wanted to go for a drink first and then we would see, what was going to happen with the lesson," was a student's testimony that spoke to ANT1. "To pass four lessons I gave him 1,000 euros. He was asking 250 euros for each lesson to pass me," another student complained.

The professor, from some asked for money, while others he sent to the tutorial schools, an others he put to work without pay, and also called for special private meetings with students. In 2015 he had gotten off with a reprimand, as the fear kept the students' mouths closed, but this time the accused were identified and arrested.

"It's a matter that students at the TEI know from the very first moment ," said TEI student spokesman Nikos Tzioutzios. "We have made many complaints, but whenever the witness was called, he disappeared. In this section, when you enter, you have 7 lessons for € 250, but if you do not pay, you can not get a degree," he complained.
